‘Peace is what she radiates. She’s sexy, she’s romantic, she’s bold. She’s ready to take over…’, Rocky S tells me, as he smiles boldly. We’ve just wrapped up his collection debut at London Fashion Week, and he’s eager to share the inspiration behind it.
With his ultimate goal being to ‘take over the world of fashion,’ as he says, it’s no surprise that he opted for a bold approach in his first collection. Accompanied by dramatic music that shook the room, he captivated us with his known abilities to intertwine his eastern culture with western influences.
‘I’m not inspired everyday…but when inspiration comes, I make good use of it’, he tells me, shocked at my initial belief that inspiration can spark from anywhere. ‘Everything is built over time. It’s a long process,’ he says, smiling.
But…let’s take it back. So, what is Rocky Star?
Rocky Star is a celebrated Indian fashion brand, dressing Bollywood celebrities and international stars, including Bollywood hits such as Kaho Naa. Self-titled fashion designer, Rocky S, loves to use the mix of cultures and eras to bring his work to life. Rocky Star’s designs often mix traditional Indian elements with Western cuts, silhouettes, and modern fabrics. He is known for using rich embroideries, beadwork, and detailed embellishments, adding a sense of luxury to his creations. This was seen through this collection which embodied crystallised textures and sheer fabric woven through almost every piece of accessory - from the headbands to the necklines.
He showcased a collection that combined British Victorian influences with contemporary Asian royal styles, all while maintaining the elegance and flair that his designs embody. When it comes to the Victorian-era, Rocky Star imitates the usage of traditional attire in the form of voluminous skirts, high, ruffled collars and puffed sleeves that add drama to the upper body shape. He furthermore uses ribbons, floral patterned fabrics, and tight corsets to portray this. Though focused on using a dark colour palette of black and grey, he didn’t fail to add shades of pastel pink, white and a dazzling sultry deep crimson rose dress that the audience just couldn’t keep their eyes off of! His collection is truly a work of art, especially when viewed in person.
So, who is the Rocky Star brand? She’s bold, daring, and unapologetically true to her Indian roots. But she’s also sexy, exciting, and enjoys pushing boundaries and reimagining what global fashion can be.
